3 Heybridge Basin Walks (Starting & Ending At Heybridge Basin Lock) – Essex

Heybridge Basin is a small village just outside of Maldon. It’s a great place to sit and watch the boats go by along the River Blackwater. You’ll find a small pay and display car park, a couple of pubs with beer gardens: The Old Ship and The Jolly Sailor next to the lock, and The Lock Tearoom (one of the Tiptree ‘Wilkon & Sons’ franchise). There are also some lovely Heybridge Basin walks.

One of the easiest Heybridge Basin walks is along the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation (the canal) or along the banks of the River Chelmer. The canal was created in 1797 and was used as a way to transport cargo, however, it is now used for recreational use.

Originally it was supposed to go through Maldon. However they objected to the proposal and instead it bypassed the town and Heybridge Basin village was built as a result of the canals construction.

There are 12 locks altogether between Chelmsford and Heybridge. But the only one you’ll come across between Maldon Town and Heybridge is the final one at Heybridge Basin. The Heybridge Basin lock connects the canal to the river estuary.

When walking away from Heybridge Basin, towards Maldon, after around 1 mile (20 minutes), you’ll reach a brick and wooden bridge to cross over the canal. Once on the other side, the path goes through a small housing estate. Turn down Stebbens Way and follow it until you come to the banks of the River Chelmer.

There’s a path that cuts up back onto the river path. Follow it to the left and after 1 mile, it loops back round to Heybridge Basin. You’ll be able to see across the river over to Promenade Park in Maldon and on the other side is a large gravel pit lake.

The route is mostly along a flat crushed gravel path, so it’s quite an easy route. Once back in Heybridge Basin, you will need to cross the canal using the lock. This is obviously a working lock, which opens and closes, so you may need to wait, or cross over the gate that is currently closed.

Heybridge Basin Lock to Beeleigh Falls/Lock

The above Heybridge Basin walk can be extended by walking to Beeleigh Falls and Lock. Instead of crossing over the bridge towards the River Chelmer, continue following the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation canal path. After around another 1 mile (20 minutes), you’ll reach Tesco Express in Maldon. Carry on along the canal path until you reach Beeleigh Falls.

Part of the route goes along the Blackwater Rail Trail. This is an 8 mile walk that connects Maldon to Witham along what was an old rail line (similar to the Flitch Way between Braintree and Bishop’s Stortford). However, it is not a continuous route due to parts now going through private land. So there are sections where walkers will need to leave the train line path and reconnect back up with it further along.

Beeleigh Falls is a man-made weir that connects the River Blackwater to the River Chelmer. There is a path that crosses over the top of the weir, along with a couple of bridges that cross over various parts of both rivers in other places.

From here, you can either double back along the canal path or loop around the Maldon Golf Course, which joins back up again opposite Tesco.

On the return, continue back on the same path all the way to Heybridge Basin, or when you reach the bridge mentioned in the 2 mile loop above, cross over the canal, through the housing estate and join up with the Chelmer River path back towards to lock.

Heybridge Lock – Osea Beach Huts – Heybridge Lock

The coastal path from Heybridge Basin can be followed for miles, but an interesting thing to see are the Osea Beach Huts! It takes around 40 minutes to walk the 2 miles from Heybridge Basin. At high tide on a warm day, the river estuary is a hive of activity, so there’s plenty to see and a lot of birdlife.

The route passes The Lock Tearoom, St George’s Play Area, the Blackwater Sailing Club, Saltcote Sailing Club, Mill Beach Marine Club before reaching Mill Beach Seaside Resort and Osea Leisure Park. Osea Leisure Park also has some fun glamping options, such as ‘pods’ and safari tents, if you are looking for a weekend getaway!

When the tide is in, the Osea beach huts are surrounded by water! Unfortunately the beach huts can not be rented, there are only 10 and they rarely come up for sale. There is a small beach area next to the beach huts, which is a popular swimming spot in summer. The river bed is mostly a stoney, muddy consistency, so it’s not the most pleasant though and it’s not really somewhere you can build sand castles!

On the sea wall, a short walk from the beach huts is Tiptree Tea Room At The View. It has great views of the Blackwater Estuary. This tearoom has a smaller menu than some of the other Tiptree locations. I had breakfast in the tearoom one morning. They serve sausage or bacon sandwiches and scrambled egg on toast.

There are a couple of lunch options, along with cream teas, cakes and hot and cold drinks. You can either sit inside, where one of the walls completely opens up on nice days, or there’s an outside terrace. It’s a great place to stop for a rest before the return trip back to Heybridge Basin.

Osea Beach Huts to Osea Road causeway to Osea Island

If you are looking to extend this walk a little further, 0.5 mile (approx. 10 minutes) from the beach huts is Osea Road causeway. This is the road that connects Osea Island to the mainland.

Osea Island is ‘private’ property. However they have several different accommodation options and sometimes host events. Guests are free to explore the island, there are bicycles, an indoor swimming pool, mini golf, a cinema room, beach volleyball and more.

During high tide the island is completely surrounded by water, so it can only be driven to at low tide. They even set the accommodation check out time around when low tide will occur!

From here, the easiest way is to retrace the coastal path back to Heybridge Basin!
